Lake Maggiore: Discover Northern Italy’s Hidden Gem Between the Alps and the Mediterranean

What do you think of when you hear the word “Northern Italy”?

The fashion capital, Milan?

The jewel of the northeast, Venice, with its canals, its world-famous glass of Murano, and its colorful buildings of Burano?

Lake Como and George Clooney’s famous villa?

Lake Garda, with its blue waters, the fun of Gardaland, and the medieval castle of Sirmione?

The sparkling wines of Franciacorta?

Or maybe Turin, if you’re a car enthusiast, a fan of Italian industry…

Anyway, forget all the famous spots in Northern Italy. Today, we’re going to take you to a place that may be less well-known than the others, but is just as magical and just as beautiful as all the ones mentioned above. After all, Italy is one of the countries with the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world — so choosing “the best” is almost impossible (Let’s be honest).

However, this place will make you as charmed as other destinations in Italy, maybe more: Lake Maggiore.

Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy is one of the most scenic lake destinations for a day trip from Milan.

Where is Lake Maggiore located?

In this section, let’s explore both the geographical and linguistic aspects — shall we?

Lake Maggiore — which literally means “Grand Lake” — is located where the Alps gently meet the Italian Mediterranean soul, creating one of the most enchanting lake landscapes in Italy. The name “Maggiore” (meaning “greater”) comes from the fact that it is considered the largest of the pre-Alpine lakes in the region, although it is the second-largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda. In the past, it was connected to Lake Mergozzo, and together they formed an even larger body of water. What truly makes Lake Maggiore “grand,” however, is its unique geographical position: stretching into Switzerland and lying between two important Italian regions, it naturally connects different landscapes, cultures, and histories, fully deserving its majestic name.

Top Reasons to visit Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore is renowned for its refined and elegant beauty, holding countless stories that many people — even Italians — may not have heard. One of its most fascinating features is the presence of 11 islands scattered across its waters: eight located on the Piedmont side of the lake, one in Lombardy, and two belonging to Switzerland. The most famous group is the Borromean Islands, which include Isola Madre (the Mother or Main Island), Isola Bella (the Beautiful Island), and Isola dei Pescatori (the Fishermen’s Island). Isola Bella, true to its name, is one of the most breathtaking spots on the lake. Before becoming home to the magnificent Baroque palace, we admire today, it originally hosted a military fortification built to defend the lake. Because who said beauty can’t also be strong?

Unesco approved: Lake Maggiore’s Natural Beauty

The lake has many botanical gardens which makes an amazing place to have a vacation for people who love the greenery coming together with the blue waters. However there is a special characteristic of the lake which mesmerize their visitors: having own microclimate!

Even though the surrounding regions that the lake is located at can have colder temperatures, the lake has a mild climate almost all year. This climate makes the area open for palm and citrus trees which you see mostly in the southern areas famous with its warmth.  The lake houses many different trees and plants you find in more tropical areas. Moreover, the lake has many nature reserves. One of them Natural Park of Val Grande including Val Grande National Park and the Ticino Valley, which together form part of the MAB UNESCO Ticino Val Grande Verbano Biosphere Reserve.

BEAUTIFUL VILLAS, GARDENS AND MONUMENTS

The elegance of Lake Maggiore comes not only from its natural beauty and mild climate, but also from its refined atmosphere and magnificent architecture. The lakeside villas — such as Villa Ponti in Arona and Villa Treves in Belgirate — have hosted many distinguished figures over the years. In Stresa, historic residences like Villa Ducale and Villa Pallavicini stand out not only for their elegant structures, but also for their beautifully maintained gardens that frame the lake in timeless charm. Did you know that Ernest Hemingway was deeply fascinated by Lake Maggiore? In fact, parts of his novel A Farewell to Arms were inspired by his stay in Stresa. Literature lovers would surely appreciate discovering the landscapes that influenced those unforgettable pages.

Finally, the lake offers countless opportunities for sports enthusiasts: you can rent a kayak, swim during the summer months, cruise across its shimmering waters, or hike and cycle along panoramic routes that reward you with breathtaking views at every turn.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE LAKE MAGGIORE?

Honestly, thanks to its delightful climate, Lake Maggiore offers a beautiful experience in every season. However, the best time to discover this gem is in spring. From late March through early April, the lake truly comes alive, making it a perfect destination to add to your travel list.

We could talk about this beautiful destination for hours, but nothing truly compares to experiencing a place firsthand. That’s why we are happy to make this stunning location easily accessible for our guests from Milan with a convenient day-trip option.
